Benefits of an APC Surge Protector

American Power Conversion (makers of the APC Surge Protector), also know as APC, is a well-known company providing power surge protection solutions to many of the problems that can lead to hardware damage, data loss, and lost work-time.

While APC was the first company to develop surge protectors for computers, the company as a whole has led the surge protection industry as a result of its quality, support and innovation.

Although most people associate lightening and/or utility problems as the main cause of damage to electronic devices and components, even smaller daily surges over time can decrease the performance and overall life of electronic devices and components.  As a result, APC, apart from offering traditional surge protector benefits, also offers options like:

  • Greater number of outlets
  • 10 ft power chord
  • Phone line splitter
  • Safety shutters
  • An LED overload indicator
  • Cord management
  • Lifetime equipment protection policy

How The APC Surge Protector Works

With a standard APC Surge Protector, the device works by passing the electrical current (from the wall or floor outlet) to a number of electrical and electronic components and devices that are plugged into the power strip. If the voltage from an outlet surges or spikes and thereby rises above an accepted level, the APC Surge Protector will divert the extra electrical energy into the outlet’s grounding wire.

A component called a metal oxide varistor, or MOV, found in the most common types of surge protectors, diverts the extra voltage.  It is the MOV that forms the connection between the hot-power-line and the outlet’s grounding line.

An APC Surge Protector beats the competition

An APC Surge Protector is more superior to other surge protective devices on the market for several reasons:

  • Should the APC Surge Protector become damaged as a result of a power spike or power surge, the device will enter a fail-safe mode, thereby disconnecting the electronic device or component from the power supply.  Unlike other surge protectors, the APC Surge Protector, does not allow excess power to come through it even if it should suffer damage as a result of a power surge.
  • It has been found that the APC Surge Protector can enhance the performance of certain computer hardware components by filtering out the EMI/RFI line noise that is know to cause data errors and frozen components (including keyboards).
  • Every APC Surge Protector includes an LED indicator light that warns a person of faulty wall wiring.  The LED indicator light also alerts a person if the APC Surge Protector is experiencing a power overload or if it has sustained sufficient damage such that the effects of the damage prevents it from being able to provide full protection to an individual’s electronic equipment, device or computer.
  • The APC Surge Protector (not all models) can provide sufficient protection to Ethernet, coaxial, and/or phone data lines.  As a result, the equipment attached to these lines is protected from back-door surges that can be harmful to these devices and components.
  • The APC Surge Protector comes with a removable cable guide with rotating cord retainer.
  • On some APC Surge Protector models, an optional phone-line splitter will allow the simultaneous use of two lines by two different components or device (i.e. a modem and phone).
